The "image of the populace" among representatives of power structures as a source of social distortions

Article Abstract:

State representatives in Ukraine must take the public mind into account while developing social policy. Experts in this field seem to prefer statements about public attitudes that reflect experts' values, and they have developed a flawed image of the public based on insufficient information about how matters actually stand.

The potential for protest in Ukrainian society

Article Abstract:

Some Ukranians continue to protest the growth of capitalism, though most are willing to endure short-term difficulty in the belief that economic stability is attainable. Events in 1998 suggest an increased willingness to protest, requiring the state to accelerate efforts to complete the transition toward capitalism.

Social monitoring of the post-Chernobyl situation

Article Abstract:

Sociological research between 1992 and 1997 with victims of the Chernobyl catastrophe shows their dissatisfaction with attempts to counteract its effects. Victims regard free medical care and convalescent services and cash subsidies as the most important forms of government aid.
