The impact of a caregiver health education program on health care costs

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted to examine whether supporting caregivers of frail elderly through a health education program (HEP) can reduce health care costs incurred by both the caregivers and the care recipients in an HMO setting. It was found that HEP is a cost-effective intervention for caregivers and care recipients receiving medical care from a staff-model HMO.

Long-term effects of outpatient geriatric evaluation and management on health care utilization, cost, and survival

Article Abstract:

A study to compare the long-term effectiveness and efficiency of an outpatient geriatric evaluation and management (GEM) program with usual primary care is presented. Outpatient GEM offers a specialized health delivery option for frail older persons that may reduce costs over the long term without having a negative impact on survival rates.
