The nature and predictors of substance abuse among lesbians

Article Abstract:

The mechanisms and indicators of substance abuse were examined among 263 lesbians to elucidate the moderating effects of parameters, such as status of relationship, social support, method of coping and magnitude of extroversion. None of the subjects were heavy drinkers and 85% abstained from alcohol. Style of coping, social support and perceived stress were not found to be risk parameters. The findings did not support the hypothesis that lesbians have less effective coping mechanisms and are prone to be less adaptive due to stress caused by isolation and discrimination.

The incidence and characteristics of violent men in substance abuse treatment

Article Abstract:

The incidence of family violence and psychosocial characteristics of men admitted into substance abuse treatment were investigated. All of the respondents reported having engaged in psychological abuse in the past year, while 58% reported at least one incident of familial violence. Greater violence was related with hostile outbursts, interpersonal insensitivity and poor overall functioning. The males also reported suspiciousness, hostility, interpersonal inadequacy and projection of blame.
