The path to redemption: fundamentalist Judaism, territory, and Jewish settler violence in the West Bank

Article Abstract:

Jewish fundamentalist organizations, particularly Kach, Kahane Chai and Gush Emunim, are beginning to redefine Jewish theology and politics through the use of theological arguments for a Jewish Eretz Israel. The territory of the Land of Israel has been raised to the status of the core element of Jewish national identity. These groups have also used religious arguments to authorize and foster violence against Palestinians and Jews. They are supported by small Israeli settlers who have moved to the West Bank.

The logic of ethnic terrorism

Article Abstract:

Ethnic terrorism varies considerably from violent activities carried out for financial, ideological or religious motives. Its goal is to promote communal identity in opposition to the identity proposed by the state. This type of terrorism may also be aimed at creating a climate of fear among a rival group's population. To solve this problem, an 'in group' policing strategy is recommended, wherein the ethnic group as a whole identifies, criticizes and suppresses these radicals.

Revenge without rules: on the renaissance of an archaic motif of violence

Article Abstract:

This article discusses the role of revenge in violence as studied by social scientists and portrayed in literature. The author suggests that revenge has become a taboo in social discourse because it is believed to be a product of an archaic world order which has been overcome through the establishment of state institutions that find and prosecute criminals; the author asserts that the desire for collective revenge still exists in society.
