The power of poetry: validating ethnic identity through a bibliotherapeutic intervention with a Puerto Rican adolescent

Article Abstract:

The use of a Puerto Rican poem during a ego-supportive bibliotherapeutic intervention with an adolescent elicited a positive response from him. Reading poetry of his own people helped in the validation of his ethnic identity, which is a very important element of the ego identity. It helped the adolescent in establishing a positive self-identity. This, in turn increased his self-esteem, improved his life functioning and helped him in achieving the goals of the treatment. The course of the treatment and the implications for the use of such a therapy in practice are discussed.

'Who Would Find You?': A question for working with suicidal children and adolescents

Article Abstract:

Psychotherapists use the question 'Who would find you?' to evaluate and treat patients with suicidal behavior since it focuses on the patient's interpersonal conflicts. The question is employed because, it was found to be helpful in identifying the factors that predispose adolescents to commit suicide since it communicates emotion as well as promotes consciousness of suicide. For the therapist, it promotes confidence and improves skill in dealing with clients with suicidal behavior.
