The rise of semiotic Marxism

Article Abstract:

There has been a reversal in the original Marxian theory of base and superstructure being connected to economics and political ideology. The reversal began with Antonio Gramsci's assertion that it was culture and ideology that ordered society. Louis Althusser furthered the process using Ferdinand Saussure's ideas of structural linguistics to combine politics and ideology. N. Poulantzas's logic proved the overlap of economics and politics. Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe carry all this transformation into the realm of discourse, thus completing the creation of Semiotic Marxism.

The peripheralization of rural America: a case study of Latino migrants in America's heartland

Article Abstract:

Migrant Latino workers in a rural community in southern Iowa have given rise to debates over immigration policies and national identity in the US. It has been postulated that the concepts of 'community membership' and 'identity' are part of the global political economy. Significantly, the issue of the Latino labor migrants in Iowa is believed to be an offshoot of global economic restructuring whose effects at the local level is revealed through a growing contest about the said concepts.

Regime change in the semiperiphery: democratization in Latin America and the Socialist Bloc

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the reasons behind the democratization of Latin America and Eastern Bloc countries is presented. This shift can be attributed to the decline of the world economy that started in 1970. The more powerful countries such as the US and European nations responded to this crisis by forming economic blocs and encouragiing free trade. On the other hand, semiperipheral countries were not strong enough to do this and resorted to changing their internal structures.
