The role of expectancy violating behaviors in the representation of trait knowledge: a summary-plus-exception model of social memory

Article Abstract:

Results from six studies undertaken by a group of researchers suggest that behaviours which differ from those expected in a subject often take on particular importance in trait knowledge. The researchers found that a judgement about someone's traits aided retrieval of memories concerning behaviours which were not consistent with the traits identified. The results strongly suggest that trait knowledge should be modelled on a summary-and-exceptions approach and that this will aid understanding of impression change processes.

A decision bound categorization approach to the study of subtyping of atypical group members

Article Abstract:

The study explores the subtyping of atypical group members through the perspective of the Decision Bound Model and Theory of categorization. Findings suggest that after the recognition of an atypical subcategory, it is included in assessments of the overall group, an occurrence that is consistent with subgrouping and not subtyping.

The mental representations of high and low entitativity groups

Article Abstract:

Studies indicate that behaviors are relied upon while making trait judgments about a low entitativity group. In the high entitativity condition, perceivers presumably rely on a previously stored trait abstraction to make a trait judgment.
