Industrial workers in Russia: adaptation, differentiation, mobility

Article Abstract:

Research reveals that stratification among workers in Russia is increasing and that the factors involved are both a result of and a contributor to economic decline. Results are based on a study of nine enterprises in different industries in Moscow, Tver, Krasnoiarsk, Vladimir, and Kaluga, Russia. Topics include differentiation of the socioeconomic positions in an enterprise and its results, such as wage gaps, the formation of closed groups, limited opportunity for promotion, and a decline in work discipline and productivity.

The "new middle classes" in Russia

Article Abstract:

The article discusses the prospect of a new middle class emerging in Russia as a result of economic reforms. Topics discussed include the definition of the term middle class, the power of criminal groups over property owners, the professionals within Russia society that may be classified as middle class, and problems that this group would like to see addressed, such as job growth.
