Time and memory: towards a pacemaker-free theory of interval timing

Article Abstract:

An alternative explanation for interval timing in animals based on the principle of memory dynamics obtained from the multiple-time-scale (MTS) model of habituation is described. The MTS model can be used in interpreting data from time-related experiments; proportional and Weber law temporal discrimination; transient and persistent effects of reinforcement emission; and discrimination of relative and absolute duration. The new model is better than the scalar expectancy theory which cannot be used in explaining some basic properties of operant behavior.

Dynamics of waiting in pigeons

Article Abstract:

The varying of interfood intervals for pigeons from cycle to cycle while varying the amount of added noise shows that behavior is affected by the interfood intervals. When varying patterns of long and short interfood intervals are presented, results show that the waiting times are not proportionately influenced by the shortest of recent interfood intervals. Two experiments test the idea that when food reinforcement is available at regular intervals, the waiting time before the first operant response is proportional to the previous interfood interval.

Time and rate measures in choice transitions

Article Abstract:

The relation between time and rate measures of behavior under conditions of changing preference is studied by conducting experiments with three pigeons. The findings indicate the relations between fixed and variable interval procedures and suggest that more attention should be paid to temporal measures in studies of free-operant choice.
