Evaluating two self-help interventions for smokeless tobacco cessation

Article Abstract:

Two self-help methods for smokeless tobacco (ST) cessation are assessed. These are the 'Enough Snuff' self-help manual and video and LifeSign, a very small computer designed for gradual ST cessation. The two interventions seemed to be equally effective.

Who enrolls in a self-help cessation program for smokeless tobacco?

Article Abstract:

A survey of smokeless tobacco users who enrolled in self-help tobacco habit treatment programs indicated that they were older and more educated than those who did not seek treatment. They were also more likely than non-participants to have tried to quit before and had experienced oral health problems.

Tobacco cessation interventions in health care settings: rationale, model, outcomes

Article Abstract:

Any health care setting should be able to offer personalized cessation assistance to tobacco users. Larger health care systems should also provide the option of more intensive interventions for smokers who do not respond to brief approaches. A model for tobacco cessation intervention in health care settings is presented, with emphasis on a team approach. It advocates a reduced role for clinicians, using counseling by allied professionals, videos, written materials and telephone communication to reinforce clinician advice. It has been proven to be effective in a number of diverse settings.
