Truth and goodness: does the sociology of inequality promote social betterment?

Article Abstract:

The historical development of sociology involves both the domination of the 'pure science' model from the 1930s to the 1960s and the predominance of the 'unmasking inequality' model since the 1970s. However, the 'reducing inequality' model, which was developed in the 1970s and 1980s, acknowledges the social utility of the sociology of inequality since it supposedly accounts for the existence of racism, classism, sexism and other such tenets. The latter model serves to strengthen the sociology of inequality and a move towards reconnecting truth and goodness is thereby made.

Problems and progress in sociological theory

Article Abstract:

Metatheoretical conflicts within the field of sociological theory have served only to cast doubts on empirical sociology. A discussion of the developments in sociological theory presents the argument that postpositivist views preclude the effectiveness of appeal to either reason or evidence in resolving some differences in the strategies employed in sociological research. The discussion involves the relations among varied theoretical endeavors, the elemental relations in theoretical strategy and the relations between the strategies themselves.
