UN refugee chief seeking help from the Gulf nations

Article Abstract:

The head of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Sedaka Ogata, has asked Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations to help finance the costs of resettling 35,000 Iraqi refugees, which includes ex-soldiers and political asylum seekers who cannot return to their country in the aftermath of the Persian Gulf war. The refugees will be resettled in Iran and other Arab countries. About two million refugees from Africa, Cambodia, El Salvador and Afghanistan who fled disasters such as drought, famine and wars, will be repatriated by the UNHCR as the situations in their countries start to improve.

The RDC is under the administration of the International Catholic Migration Commission in Geneva. The US State Department also provides funding and program assistance.
