Who smokes in Hollywood? Characteristics of smokers in popular films from 1940 to 1989

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to examine how smokers were depicted in 100 popular films made in a five decade period. Data analysis revealed that smokers were shown to be more romantic and sexually active than nonsmokers and as marginally more intelligent than nonsmokers. However, smokers and nonsmokers did not differ in terms of attractiveness, goodness, friendliness, aggression, socioeconomic status or outcome at the end of the film. These findings indicate that smokers are depicted a little more positively than nonsmokers.

Photoemission electron microscopy study of remanent magnetic domain states in ferromagnetic wedge films deposited on substrates with micrometer-sized square plateaus

Article Abstract:

A detailed study of the remanent magnetic domain configurations in demagnetized polycrystalline ferromagnetic thin film wedges of cobalt and Permalloy deposited on patterned silicon silicon substrates with micrometer-sized square plateau is presented. It is observed that, at intermediate film thickness a significant modification of the domain configuration to small domains is observed.

Intrinsic exciton transitions in high-quality ZnO thin films grown by plasma-enhanced molecular-beam epitaxy on sapphire substrates

Article Abstract:

High quality ZnO thin films are grown by plasma-enhanced molecular-beam epitaxy on sapphire substrates and free-exciton absorption and exciton-LO phonon absorption peaks is observed in the films at room temperature. It is indicated that the exciton states are stable even at room temperature.
