William Nathan Schoenfeld (1915-1996): innovative scientist, inspiring teacher, relentless questioner, complicated man

Article Abstract:

A psychologist describes the scientific and academic contributions of William Nathan Schoenfeld, along with his personal qualities as a teacher, researcher and thinker. Schoenfeld was dissatisfied with his theoretical approach to avoidance and punishment as they were difficult to measure. His work on heart-rate conditioning in humans reflected his interests in experimental anxiety. He gave innovative suggestions on response variability and favored the use of parametric analysis. As a teacher, he was very demanding in his expectations from students.
