Writing to be read: changing the culture and reward structure of American sociology

Article Abstract:

Several factors influence the inability of books written by sociologists to attract the attention of both the mass media and the American public. While the topics discussed in sociology books affect society as a whole, they do not have a broad audience with the general public because of their scholarly nature. Moreover, sociology books tend to include an abundance of statistical information that may bore the readers. However, sociologists can remedy this situation by writing books that will appeal to laymen and professionals alike.

How to become a dominant American social scientist: the case of Theda Skocpol

Article Abstract:

Theda Skocpol became a leading figure among American social scientists due to the dissemination of misreadings of important ideas in her book 'States and Social Revolution: A Comparative Analysis of France, Russia, and China.' These misinterpretations transformed Skocpol's structuralist, state-centered, and comparative concepts of social revolution into anticultural, state-determined, and inductivist ones. The errors were first introduced by academic reviewers and redactors.

American apartheid: segregation and the making of the underclass

Article Abstract:

'American Apartheid: Segregation and the Making of the Underclass,' by Douglas S. Massey and Nancy A. Denton, reveals that studies on the causes and effects of urban poverty overlook the element of racial segregation prevalent in the US. The book explains that segregation in housing results in the concentration of poverty.
