Invisible minds, visible bodies

Article Abstract:

The University of Cambridge rejected degrees for women in Jun. 1897, but women nevertheless made an important contribution to the work undertaken at the university's Cavendish Laboratory. Low-status positions such as assistants, technicians, research students and instrument makers were frequently filled by women. Rose Paget, who became laboratory hostess when she married J.J. Thomson, one of the famous men associated with the Cavendish Laboratory, had previously been carrying out research on soap films. Scientific papers written by women were presented by men.

Moving mountains

Article Abstract:

Female attorneys have made great strides since the ABA Commission on the Status of Women Lawyers relased its findings in 1988, but hostility and harassment still thrive. The ABA Commission on the Status of Women in the Profession's new report details lower pay, presumptions of incompetence, and disproportionate home-life burdens for women. The ABA Journal re-interviewed five women whom it profiled in 1988, showing how their lives and careers have progressed or changed.
