Muse, interrupted: this week's 50th-anniversary celebration of the New York City Ballet honors Tanaquil Le Clercq, Balanchine's wife, inspiration and star, whose career was tragically cut short by polio

Article Abstract:

The 50th anniversary of the New York City Ballet will include a special tribute to Tanny Le Clercq, the epitome of the Balanchine ballerina. She made her debut in 1946 as a student of the company's School of American Ballet. She and Balanchine married on New Year's Eve, 1952. When the company was on tour in Denmark in 1956, she began to feel pain in her body between Sunday matinee and evening performances. The following day she lost her ability to walk, and knew that her career was over. She and Balanchine remained married for fourteen years.
