The Dept of Energy will lead an initiative to install one million solar energy systems on the roofs of homes and buildings by 2010. The agency will use existing federal resources to promote solar energy sales and coordinate with communities and other groups to expand the use of solar technology. The Million Solar Roofs initiative is expected to generate the same electricity capacity of three to five coal-fired plants, to reduce carbon dioxide emissions equivalent to that produced by 850,000 cars and to produce 70,000 new jobs by 2010.
