Accuracy of urine specific gravity and osmolality as indicators of hydration status

Article Abstract:

An investigation compares the sensitivity of urine specific gravity [U(sub sg)], urine osmolality [U(sub osm)] and plasma osmolality [P(sub osm)] at progressive stages of acute hypertonic dehydration and determined whether [U(sub sg)] or [U(sub osm)] accurately reflected hydration status. Incremental changes in [P(osm)] were observed as subjects dehydrated by 5% of body weight and rehydrated while [U(sub sg)] and [U(sub osm)] showed delayed dehydration-related changes.

Effectiveness of glycerol as a rehydrating agent

Article Abstract:

This article examines the beneficial effects of glycerol on physiological responses to exhaustive exercise following a dehydration and rehydration protocol. Findings indicate that subjects who consumed a water and glycerol solution during rehydration had improved plasma volume restoration and exercise test performance when compared to subjects that only consumed water.
