American promise: U.S. fields credible entries in the Whitbread

The US is expected to fare well in the 1997 Whitbread Round the World Race on Sep 21. One of the three formidable teams fielded in the competition is Dennis Conner's Toshiba. The boat's skipper will be New Zealand's Chris Dickson, joined by operation managers Bill Trenkle and Mick Harvey.

The costs of future America's Cup races should be reduced from the $500 million collectively spent on the 1992 Cup. Fifty suggestions to control costs are presented, including a maximum of three boats per team, aluminum hulls and a one-design rule to limit research and development costs.

The eight-person crew of the Pelagic voyaged to Antarctica for a 35-day stay to film a documentary for ESPN. They faced extremely challenging conditions during the voyage and while there, when they climbed the face of icebergs. Their adventure is described.
