An fMRI analysis of neural activity during perceived zone-state performance

Article Abstract:

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is used to identify zone state patterns of neural activation that occurs among athletes during a hypnotically recalled zone-sate performance. The analysis of composite group data has revealed significant neural activation of zone performance (ZP) over normal performance (NP) thereby indicating that performance in a zone state involves identifiable characteristics of neural processing.

Applying terror management theory to performance: Can reminding individuals of their mortality increase strength output?

Article Abstract:

The study was carried out suggesting that the theory and the corresponding effects of mortality salience (MS) may be useful in understanding physical effort and athletic performance. This study was designed to assess whether MS would not only influence sport-related self-reports but would also motivate people invested in strength training to actually display greater physical strength.

Toward an expanded measure of athletic identity: The inclusion of public and private dimensions

Article Abstract:

An exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis is used to establish the structure of the psychometrically scale and the Public-Private Athletic Identity Scale (PPAIS) is compared with other existing athletic identity measures. Regressions are used to show that the PPAIS boosts the prediction of behavioral measures over other types of identity scales.
