Article Abstract:

Boat lifelines are often taken for granted even if they are the 'safety net' of the boat. The bow and stern pulpits have to be strong enough to handle the loads carried by the lifeline. Tubular rails must be well constructed and firmly installed to bear the weight and force of crew members.

A transatlantic cruise aboard the US Naval Academy's 6-ft Hood-designed sloop American Promise was used to test the latest navigation and communications equipment. These include Raytheon Pathfinder's SL72 LCD radar display, Ocean Sentry active transponder and Icom 710 HF transceiver.

Water makers come of age

Article Abstract:

Reverse-osmosis water makers use a semipermeable membrane to separate seawater from fresh water. Several types of power systems are available. Even a boat with a large-capacity water maker needs adequate tankage.
