Brain against pain: good thoughts may be potent painkillers

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that thinking positive thoughts before and after surgery can reduce post-operative pain. Twenty-six patients who listened to positive statements about their recovery from gastrointestinal surgery requested less pain medication than 25 patients who simply heard an informational tape.

New lean on life: postures may prevent surgery for leg pain

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that some people can find relief from leg pain caused by osteoarthritis of the spine by sitting down or leaning forward for 2 to 10 minutes. After learning the intervention, 36 of 47 people with the condition did not need surgery for five years.

Clear landings: how to tame airplane ear pain

Article Abstract:

A recent study shows that taking a decongestant containing pseudoephredrine can prevent ear pain that occurs during airplane trips. Of 190 fliers given the decongestant, only 32% had ear pain. Decongestants help to relieve pressure that builds up in ears.
