Cardiac remodeling in women athletes and implications for cardiovascular screening

Article Abstract:

The characteristics of cardiac remodeling and the gender-specific differences were investigated by evaluating a large population of highly trained and elite female athletes in comparison with male elite teammates. It was concluded that the correct identification of physiologic left ventricular (LV) dilation may avoid an unnecessary withdrawal of the athlete from competitions, and the unjustified loss of the varied benefits derived from sport.

Prevention of heart disease in female athletes

Article Abstract:

The diagnosis of artherosclerotic CAD in a female athlete who does not smoke or have diabetes suggests congenital defect in lipoprotein metabolism such as defect in the LDL receptor or familial dysbetalipoproteinemia. If CAD is diagnosed in women athletes, they should be provided. Strategies to prevent atherosclerotic coronary disease in older female athletes should be directed toward management of the basic atherosclerotic risk factors.

Growth of highly versus moderately trained competitive female artistic gymnasts

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted to investigate whether growth is adversely affected in 137 young competitive female artistic gymnasts involved in different training volumes. Conclusions reveal that advanced- and intermediate-training level competitive female gymnasts tend to exhibit an adolescent growth spurt that is similar in timing and tempo to short, normal, slowly maturing girls.
