Case report of Exertional rhabdomyolysis in a 12-year-old boy

Article Abstract:

Exertional rhabdomyolysis, muscle damage from overexertion exercise, is reported in a case study of a 12-year-old boy, who as a punishment performed rigorous exercise and the boy reported intense muscle soreness in the thighs and dark urine post exercise. Although exertional rhabdomyolysis is rare in young children, educational material should be incorporated on potential danger of excessive exercise in children in physical education and coaching curriculum.

Mechanisms of variability in strength loss after muscle-lengthening actions

Article Abstract:

The role of mechanisms of variability such as neural drive and peripheral function in an early development of muscle strength loss after muscle-lengthening actions is examined. Analysis reveals that a greater impairment of the peripheral function leads to greater voluntary strength loss after lengthening exercises, indicating that such variations are normally localized within the periphery.

Serum creatine kinase levels and renal function measures in exertional muscle damage

Article Abstract:

A study examines the natural history of exertional muscle damage and renal function with profoundly elevated creatine kinase (CK) values in a large population of healthy subjects. Results show exertional muscle damage produced by eccentric exercise in healthy individuals can cause profound CK and myoglobin (Mb) elevations without renal impairment.
