Children's physical activity: Using accelerometers to validate a parent proxy record

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to validate a parent proxy record of children's physical activity with CSA Model 7164 accelerometers. It was found that the parent proxy record is not a valid instrument to measure the physical activity levels of children, even for children over 10 yr of age, as the accelerometer and proxy record showed poor to fair agreement for the entire monitoring period.

The epidemiology of walking for physical activity in the United States

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that neighborhood streets appear to be popular walking place for physical activity by both regular and occasional walkers. Reluctant walkers tend to notice barriers to walking in terms of lack of sidewalks and poor lighting. Results suggest for an ecological approach to influence walking for physical activity by instiling self-confidence and social support.

Energy expenditure of walking and running: Comparison with prediction equations

Article Abstract:

The study on the energy expenditure of walking and running is conducted to establish the published prediction equations for the energy expenditure of walking and running compared with the measured values. Running has a greater energy cost than walking on both the track and treadmill.
