Coaching feedback as a source of information about perceptions of ability: a developmental examination

Article Abstract:

Research shows that athletic coaching feedback has a significant impact on psychological development, particularly perceptions of ability. Studies monitored responses in children from coaches who provided informational, evaluative or neutral feedback. Children ranked praise as the highest source of ability information, over informational and neutral feedback, after successful task completion. Informational feedback was rated highest after unsuccessful task attempts.
