Research shows that folate may prevent high levels of homocysteine, which is associated with heart disease and stroke. New studies show that the amino acid may be a factor in deep vein thrombosis, or clogs in the veins that cause tenderness and pain.

Not too late for folate: common nutrient may fend off strokes

Article Abstract:

New research indicates that cereals and other foods fortified with folate may help to prevent strokes. Folate controls the blood levels of homocysteine, a chemical believed to cause heart disease if it exists in high amounts.
