Anaerobic performance in 5- to 7-yr-old children of low birthweight

Article Abstract:

Results demonstrate that extremely low birthweight children perfom lower than very low birthweight in anaerobic muscle exercises. Data indicate that this may be due mailnly to smaller muscle mass but low fast-twitch muscle fibers, low muscle phosphogen content, and motor control dificiency.

Consistency in preventing voluntary dehydration in boys who drink a flavored carbohydrate-NaCl beverage during exercise in the heat

Article Abstract:

Studies show that drinking a carbohydrate-NaCl beverage on a voluntary basis is sufficient to prevent dehydration in 10- to 12-year-old boys exercising in the heat. Physiological variables monitored during the test included body weight, stomach fullness perception, thirst, rectal temperature and heart rate. In 72 sessions, 67 demonstrated a positive fluid intake from voluntary ingestion of a carbohydrate-NaCl beverage.

Preventing dehydration in children with cystic fibrosis who exercise in the heat

Article Abstract:

Studies show that higher levels of sodium chloride in flavored drinks help cystic fibrosis patients avoid voluntary dehydration during exercise. Due to the increased loss of sodium chloride in the sweat of cystic fibrosis patients, a greater amount of it is needed in patients' fluid intake so that proper body chemistry can be maintained.
