Own blood use grows

Article Abstract:

Autologous blood transfusion is common amongst patients requiring blood transfusions after elective surgery in the US, and demand for the practice is growing in the UK. Patients either donate their blood before an operation or medical personnel reclaim and prepare blood which was lost during the operation. Advantages for patients of receiving their own blood include a more rapid recovery and reduced risk of exposure to infection. Experts have highlighted this second advantage following media speculation on the risk of contracting Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease through blood transfusions.

Religious study

Article Abstract:

The University of Cambridge has announced the establishment of a lectureship in Theology and Natural Science. This comes in the wake of a one million pound donation by best-selling author Susan Howatch whose views on science and theology are being apparently mirrored by the university. Detractors are saying that the venerable university has compromised its academic responsibilities in accepting the donation.
