Docking the dive boat

Article Abstract:

Divers should remember several pointers in throwing dock lines and securing them because they may sometimes be asked to help in docking the dive boat. In throwing a dock line, the line should be coiled loosely, with the end that is fastened to the boat or dock as the starting point and working toward the free end. The right hand is used for coiling with the left used in holding the coils. Afterwards, both coils are thrown by the right hand with a full side-arm motion. The throw should be high and hard so that the line passes over the head of the catcher.

Life after Mitch

Article Abstract:

Hurricane Mitch devastated the Bay Islands of Honduras in Oct 1998. The storm, which packed wind gusts of up to 280 mph, damaged the reefs located in the islands. The 350-mile wide hurricane also damaged several buildings and dock facilities and left 10,000 dead. In addition, highway bridges were swept by floods. However, resorts have nearly completed all their rebuilding and restoration efforts and are scheduled to re-open by Feb 1999.

Pushing limits, pushing luck

Article Abstract:

Diver Francisco 'Pipin' Ferreras thought he broke his own record of 150 meters for two-breath, no-limits free diving in front of crowds and TV cameras on Jun 6, 1998. However, a closer look at the data recorder on the evening of the same day showed that he had not done so since the sled he rode underwater did not bring him to depths exceeding 150 meters. Pipin then repeated the same dive the next day and set a new record of 155 meters.
