Effects of cyclosporine-A on rat soleus muscle fiber size and phenotype

Article Abstract:

The effects of cyclosporine-A (CsA) on several muscle properties are analyzed, by hypothesizing that CsA treatment would cause fiber atrophy, as well as increase in type IIa myosin heavy chain (MHC) content and oxidative enzyme activities in the soleus muscle. Results show CsA administration resulted in atrophy of the soleus muscle, marked by a reduced whole muscle size and a 22 percent decrease in fiber cross-sectional area.

Skeletal muscle oxidative capacity and exercise tolerance in rats with heart failure

Article Abstract:

This article examines whether exercise intolerance occurs after myocardial infarction (MI) due to reductions in oxidative enzyme activity in skeletal muscles. Results show that both reductions in oxidative enzymes and exercise intolerence occur after MI, but do not appear related to one another.

Induction of mitochondrial stress proteins following treadmill running

Article Abstract:

Results demonstrate that treadmill endurance training leads to increased levels of heat shock protein60 and glucose-regulated protein75 in plantaris muscle aiding in tranport and assembly of mitochondrial enzymes.
