Two young bicycling enthusiasts, William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson, began working on a prototype for a motorcycle in 1901. William and Walter Davidson helped the pair develop the design further, and in 1903 they formed Harley-Davidson Inc. By 1910, the firm had 149 employees.

Harley-Davidson was founded in 1903 and has manufactured hundreds of different motorcycle models in the last 90 years. Thirteen models that influenced the direction of motorcycle design are highlighted. They include Harley's first motorcycle, the J series and the XR750.

Harley-Davidson introduced the cafe-racer style XLCR in 1975. The motorcycle was not a successful seller, primarily because it did not appeal to the styling preferences of Harley customers. In 1992, however, the 1970s bike is worth owning and riding.
