Getting the range: Bill Kiger's system for training close-working bird dogs

Article Abstract:

Kiger's Lancewood Kennels in Park Hill, MO, uses a unique and effective birddog training regimen that begins when puppies are only 8-10 weeks old. Kiger's exercises to make dogs associate him with birds and birdhunting, and his use of barrel exercises to teach stillness in pointing, are described.

Making a point: hunting is always better when you're searching for birds, not dogs

Article Abstract:

Kiger breeds pointers that are easily trained to adjust their range, aside from being good bird dogs. He had a good hunting dog in the 1960s, but the dog died before Kiger could breed it. Kiger was not able to find another suitable dog until the 1980s.

Steadying the spaniel

Article Abstract:

Training spaniels to be effective bird dogs requires patience. The dogs inherently desire to flush a bird out of the brush, and can be trained to wait for the appropriate signal from the hunter to chase the bird.
