True Confessions

Article Abstract:

The author recalls a race in which he did not stop to help a fallen runner. He partially attributes this behavior to his days as a high-school competitor, when coaches taught him to exploit the weaknesses of opponents. The balance between competition and camaraderie can be hard to strike.
