Winners of the Cruising World magazine's 1998 Boat of the Year contest are presented. These include Dehler 41 DS as the Overall Cruising Boat of the Year, Island Packet 320 as Best Mid-Size Cruiser, Beneteau 411 as Best Value in Full-Size Cruiser, and Hunter 340 as Best Value in Mid-Size Cruiser.

Putting safety gear to the test

Article Abstract:

Sailboats participating in the Around Alone race are equipped with Trimble Galaxy Inmarsat-C terminals. During emergencies, sailors can immediately radio race officials that they are in distress. Unlike SSB systems, Inmarsat-C is not affected by the weather or communications traffic.

"The rules go out the window." (marine damage caused by Hurricane Andrew)

Article Abstract:

Hurricane Andrew cut a narrow but devastating path through the Bahamas, causing a storm surge as high as 18 feet in Northern Eleuthera. In Florida the hurricane damaged an estimated 1,000 boats over 30 feet long. Preparations by boat owners were either ineffectual or nonexistent.
