New resistance in Staphylococcus aureus

Article Abstract:

Doctors should have expected that the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus would eventually become resistant to the antibiotic vancomycin. Vancomycin was introduced in the 1950s and in the 1990s it remained the only drug that could be used against strains of S. aureus that are resistant to most other antibiotics. However, at least three case reports in 1999 show that the bacterium can become resistant to vancomycin if the patient takes the drug for long periods of time. This means that there are no effective treatments for S. aureus infection except for new antibiotics that have not been adequately tested.

A sew-sew sex life?

Article Abstract:

The discovery of advertisements for devices resembling the modern vibrator in early 20th-century American popular needlework magazines prompted the hypothesis that the vibrator was invented to treat women for 'hysteria.' However the technical advisory board of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) was convinced that someone was playing an elaborate practical joke when an article on the subject was published in the IEEE journal, 'Technology and Society', in Jul. 1989. The controversy merely provided publicity for the article which was proved to be genuine.
