"Hats and bats all the way." ('Critical Mass' monthly bicycle riding event in San Francisco, CA)

Article Abstract:

The monthly 'Critical Mass' bicycle ride event in San Francisco, CA last Jul. 25, 1997 posted a record of over 10,000 riders and attracted numerous media people. The event in Jun. 1997 had resulted in monstrous traffic jams which spurred the police to threaten a crackdown with 'hats and bats all the way.'
