High-technology navigational devices can help backpackers to keep from getting lost. Some are easier to use than others, and the units can cost as little as $129 and as much as $499. Four models are rated, with price, memory, ease of use and other factors discussed.

Raising the stakes

Even stand-alone tents need to be securely fastened, or else a stiff gust of wind can send them airborne. The best tent stakes, including which materials, shapes and sizes to use, are described. Steel and aluminum are better than synthetic materials.
