In praise of spring pike: a water wolf's primal urge makes it run upstream; an angler's makes him follow

Article Abstract:

The spawning migration of northern pike marks the beginning of spring and usually takes place after the first thaw. Smelt makes an excellent bait for northern pike, and should be used with a wide-bent hook. The first catch of the season was a 30-inch pike.

Pike and patience

Article Abstract:

Fishing for pike with live bait requires patience because it usually takes about 20 seconds for the pike to swallow the bait. Slowly reeling the line rather than tugging at it will keep the fish from escaping.
