Intrapersonal and situational predictors of coaching burnout

Article Abstract:

Situation and behavior are less useful in predicting the likelihood of coaching burn out than are disposition and cognitive factors. The results of the Maslach Burnout Inventory, a Trait Anxiety Inventory and a demographic questionnaire responded to by 848 college and high school coaches imply a moderate level of burn out among respondents, with female coaches indicating a higher level of emotional exhaustion. The most strongly predictive indicator was trait anxiety, and some 1986 research was validated.

The SSSC identifies nine sources: mastery, demonstration of ability, preparation, self-image, social support, coaching, vicarious experience, comfort in environment and situational favorableness. The nine sources can be distilled to three: achievement, self-regulation, and climate.
