Article Abstract:

Sand bars immediately outside often obstruct river entrances, particularly small ones. The position and depth over the bar may change slowly over the time or quite suddenly following a flood or storm and is quite risky. The best approach to tricky entrances and river bars is encapsulated in five words 'when in doubt, stay out'.

The vast majority of modern masts are hollow tubes with numerous openings for halyards and fittings, which can cause flooding in a knockdown. A boat with a sealed mast is less dependable on ballast to prevent a capsize.
