Kodiak Island refuge: the future for Alaska's Kodiak Island bear population is looking much brighter

Article Abstract:

Part of the money received as settlement for the Exxon Valdez oil spill may be used to purchase 230,000 acres on Kodiak Island. The action will enlarge the island's refuge for the grizzly bears. The land that would be purchased is owned by Alaska Native corporations, who want to develop it for tourism.

The laws that designate endangered species and their protection do not focus on the prevention of an animal becoming endangered and nor do they compensate private property owners for lost property. A likely proliferation of endangered species could occur if humans do not act more responsibly.
