Let the discussions continue: a reaction to Locke's comments on Weinberg and Weigand

Article Abstract:

E.A. Locke's comments about research on the goal setting-performance relationship in sport and exercise settings are appreciated. He focuses on five points regarding goal-setting performance relationships in sport and exercise. While it is important that researchers use imagination and innovation in conducting studies, it is equally important to consider the external validity of their work for making the results useful to the practitioners. Qualitative methodologies and case studies as well as field studies and experiments are essential for linking research with practice.

Predicting achievement anxiety: a social-cognitive perspective

Article Abstract:

A 1998 study by researchers at De Montfort University in Bedford, UK tested several factors related to athletic achievement anxiety. Factors that produced anxiety were little belief in one's ability and excessive concentration on the outcome. Athletes who were highly competitive had less anxiety. The meaning athletes ascribe to achievement is an important factor for further research.
