Longitudinal changes in physical activity in a biracial cohort during adolescence

Article Abstract:

Longitudinal changes in physical activity have been studied in an adolescent biracial cohort, including black girls and white girls, numbering 2379, with the finding that longitudinal data on physical activity collected in the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Inst. (NHLBI) Growth and Health Study (NGHS) cohort further confirm a dramatic decrease in the overall level of physical activity during the transition from childhood to adolescence. The consistency in the three methods studied indicates that a three-day diary (AD) and the habitual patterns questionnaire (HAQ) are useful for assessment of activity levels in adolescent females.

Physical activity and cardiovascular risk factors in a developing population

Article Abstract:

This article examines noncommunicable diseases in emerging countries, focusing on the role of exercise in the acquisition of cardiovascular disease in Nigeria. Researchers measured occupational and leisure activity, body mass index, blood pressure, and cholesterol level in a group of Nigerians, and findings suggest that cardiovascular disease risk was heightened by a lack of physical activity.

Self-perceived barriers to activity participation among sedentary adolescent girls

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to identify barriers to activity participation during adolescence in a biracial cohort of sedentary girls and to corroborate the self-reported barriers with other corresponding information. Self-reported barriers to activity participation among sedentary girls were found to be internal and uncorrelated with other corresponding external factors.
