Media promotion of the paradigm citizen/golfer: an analysis of golf magazines' representations of disability, gender, and age

Article Abstract:

This article examines the representation of golfers who are older, female, or disabled in major golf magazines. A content analysis of five issues revealed that these populations of golfers are underrepresented in advertisements and articles and that sports magazines reinforce golfing stereotypes.

An ideal misconstrued: newspaper coverage of the Atlanta Paralympic Games in France and Germany

Article Abstract:

This article examines the coverage of the 1996 Paralympic Games, an international competition for disabled athletes, by eight German and French newspapers. The majority of the articles misconstrued the underlying principles of the competition such as equal opportunity and personal excellence and primarily focused on medal rankings and national success.

Subverting bodies/ambivalent representations: media analysis of paralympian, Hope Lewellen

Article Abstract:

This article examines the media coverage of Hope Lewellen, a wheelchair tennis player in the 1996 Paralympic Games, to investigate media representations of gender and disability in sports. An analysis of a feature television segment provides insight into how media coverage of disabled athletes reinforces traditional sports-related stereotypes.
