Boats at sea can be adversely affected by severe downbursts, which are sudden downdrafts with wind speeds of up to 150 mph. Downbursts can be classified as dry or wet and macro (more than 2.5 miles in diameter) or micro (less than 2.5 miles in diameter).

A proposed vessel traffic information system based on vessel reports of Global Positioning System (GPS)-derived position and identity via VHF radio could prevent boat collisions. The system requires a transponder-mode-capable VHF/DSC radio and a GPS.
