Article Abstract:

The National Wilderness Preservation System includes more than 75 small areas under 5,000 square feet. Fifteen of these are profiled here, including the smallest, which is Pelican Island, FL, at six acres. An analysis of what is legally considered wilderness area is included.

Nature and solitude can be a relaxing and enjoyable combination. Backpacking alone should not, however, be attempted by people lacking skills and experience. One man's solo trip is recounted, and tips on traveling safely alone are given.

Theodore Roosevelt spent a few years in the North Dakota Badlands, which affected his vision of nature profoundly. His later conservation efforts sprang from the impact of having lived in the Badlands. Roosevelt was also an avid hunter.
