A Roper Organization survey has determined that most Americans feel that more effort needs to be made to fight water and air pollution, protect wetlands and natural areas and endangered species. Many Americans feel that usage of natural areas should be free.

The federal government has failed to manage public lands and fisheries in ways that most benefit the public at large. Issues surrounding the Mining Law of 1872, commercial fisheries management, and below-cost timber sales are examined in detail.
