Navigating at anchor

Article Abstract:

Effective navigating at anchor can be done by selecting two ranges, one forward of the boat and one abeam and taking note of the bearings to the ranges. This could be augmented by other systems such as the GPS and radar to determine boat drift at anchor.

Sailors should know how to tell the distance between their boat and the shore through triangulation without the aid of electronic instruments. Triangulation involves the use of geometry and distance-rate-time equations to get a precise distance reading.
